Midjourney founder, solo-led to dominance

David Holz

Founder — Midjourney

Profile

David Holz is the founder of Midjourney, the AI image generation lab that became a cultural phenomenon without a single venture dollar. That fact alone — a billion-dollar AI product built on a Discord bot, by a tiny team, against competitors who raised hundreds of millions — is why developers should pay attention to what he’s doing. Before Midjourney, Holz co-founded Leap Motion in 2010, the hand-tracking peripheral company that chased the VR dream for a decade before selling to Ultraleap in a $30M fire sale in 2019. He studied applied math at UNC Chapel Hill and left a PhD program to build hardware. The Leap Motion years taught him something the second time around: optimize for staying alive and staying independent, not for the press release.

Midjourney launched its open beta in July 2022 and by the end of that year was already profitable. Holz ran it as an “independent research lab that happens to make products” — no investors, no API, no marketing spend, distribution via Discord because Discord was free and worked. By 2025 the company pulled roughly $500M in revenue with around 100 people. The mission, in his own words, is “to make humans more imaginative, not to make imaginative machines” — a framing worth chewing on if you’re building AI tools. He’s also allergic to being called a CEO. Prefers “founder.” Says they’re “not very businessy.”

What Holz proves is something the VC-industrial complex doesn’t want to be true: you can train a frontier generative model, run a hit product, and keep the cap table yours if the tech is good enough and the team is small enough. V7 shipped in April 2025 as a full architectural rebuild, and the V1 Video Model followed in June 2025. In 2026 the company is pushing into hardware — they hired a former Leap Motion and Apple Vision Pro engineer to lead it — which is Holz quietly closing the loop on the input-device ideas he never got to finish at Leap.

For developers learning AI, Holz is the counterweight to Sam Altman and Dario Amodei. Same decade, same technology, opposite playbook. You don’t need a trillion-dollar compute contract to ship something people love. You do need taste, a tight team, and the patience to not raise money you’ll regret taking.

Controversies

Training data and consent. In a widely-cited 2022 Forbes interview, Holz acknowledged Midjourney was trained on roughly a hundred million images scraped without artist consent, comparing the process to how a human artist learns by looking at other art. That framing cost him credibility with the artist community and is now central to the Disney and Universal v. Midjourney lawsuit filed June 2025 — the first time major Hollywood studios have sued an AI company directly. The suit alleges Midjourney functions as a “virtual vending machine” for copyrighted characters like Darth Vader, Shrek, and Homer Simpson. The case is ongoing and likely to define training-data law for generative AI.
