Fast tech explainer, 100 seconds format

Fireship (Jeff Delaney)

Creator — Fireship

Profile

Jeff Delaney, better known as Fireship, is the closest thing developer YouTube has to a universal translator. His channel takes whatever the industry dumped on Hacker News this week — a new framework, a new model, a new acquisition, a new lawsuit — and compresses it into a sub-two-minute explainer that is funny, accurate, and genuinely informative. For a lot of working developers, Fireship is how they first hear about things. The tongue-in-cheek voice and meme cuts hide the fact that the technical content is almost always correct.

He started the channel as “Angular Firebase” in 2017, doing the kind of long tutorial content that dominated dev YouTube at the time. He was a self-taught web developer, a Google Developer Expert on Firebase, and a Kaggle hobbyist who’d dabbled in ML before it became fashionable. The rebrand to Fireship in 2019 and the launch of the “100 Seconds of X” format in late 2019 changed everything — short, dense, tightly edited explainers that treat the viewer like a busy adult. The channel now has over 4 million subscribers and has become a weekly habit for a large slice of the industry.

Two series matter most for anyone learning AI. 100 Seconds of X gives you the shape of a new tool — what it is, who made it, what it replaces — in the time it takes to finish a coffee. The Code Report is his weekly news recap, and since 2023 it has been dominated by AI: GPT releases, Claude launches, Gemini updates, open-source model drops, the Cursor-vs-Copilot-vs-Windsurf wars, whatever Sam Altman tweeted that got VCs excited. He is skeptical without being cynical, which in AI media is a rare setting.

For a developer catching up on AI, the value proposition is simple: his format is the fastest way to find out whether a new thing is worth your weekend. He won’t teach you transformer math — go to Andrej Karpathy for that — but he’ll tell you what a new model actually changes in practice, and he’ll do it before you’ve finished your second cup. He also runs fireship.io, a paid course platform covering full-stack, Firebase, Next.js, and AI-adjacent topics in more depth than the YouTube format allows.
