Founded Stability AI, open-source image generation
Emad Mostaque
Profile
Emad Mostaque is the founder of Stability AI, the company that open-sourced Stable Diffusion in August 2022 and, in doing so, lit the fuse on the consumer image-AI explosion. Before Stability, he ran a hedge fund and dabbled in AI consulting for public-sector projects. His singular bet — that frontier generative models should be freely downloadable, remixable, and runnable on consumer hardware — turned out to be the most consequential move in open-source AI so far. Overnight, Stable Diffusion spawned an entire ecosystem: ControlNet, LoRA fine-tunes, ComfyUI, Automatic1111, and thousands of derivative products.
What followed was a textbook case of visionary-founder burnout meeting venture-capital physics. Stability raised at a reported $1B valuation, expanded into audio, video, and language models, and burned through cash faster than it could raise more. Mostaque spent freely, made sweeping promises, and accumulated claims — about his credentials, his partnerships, his company’s strength — that didn’t always survive scrutiny. Forbes and other outlets documented a pattern of exaggeration. Investors including Lightspeed Venture Partners and Coatue lost patience, key researchers departed, and in March 2024 Mostaque resigned as CEO, saying you can’t beat centralized AI with more centralized AI.
Since leaving, he has pivoted to Intelligent Internet (originally “Schelling AI”), an open, decentralized-AI project pitching a “Third Path” between closed corporate labs and Big Tech capture. The vision: sovereign personal AI agents for everyone, an economic layer that routes value to data and compute providers, and a published whitepaper and “Master Plan” laying out the architecture. II released II-Agent V1 as an open-source coding/agent system benchmarked on Terminal Bench and SWE-Bench, and Mostaque has been publishing books and essays in his “Intelligent Economics” series.
For developers, Mostaque is worth paying attention to for one reason: Stable Diffusion. Whatever comes of his reputation or his next venture, he is the person who forced the world to reckon with open-weights generative AI at scale. The entire “local model” movement — the reason you can run image models on a laptop, the reason Hugging Face has tens of thousands of fine-tunes — traces back to that one release. Everything else is commentary.

Controversies
- Credential and partnership exaggerations. A June 2023 Forbes investigation documented inflated claims about an Oxford master’s degree, a “strategic” Amazon deal that was a standard cloud contract, and partnerships with the OECD, WHO, and World Bank that those organizations denied. Pitch decks described Stability as having “co-created” Midjourney; Midjourney founder David Holz said it was a “very small” donation.
- Co-founder lawsuit. In 2023, co-founder Cyrus Hodes sued Mostaque alleging fraud and breach of fiduciary duty, claiming he was misled into selling his 15% stake for $100 based on representations that the company was essentially worthless.
- Financial management at Stability. Reporting detailed payroll uncertainty, unpaid invoices, and transactions between Stability and accounts controlled by Mostaque and his wife — part of the investor pressure that eventually forced his resignation.
