Mustafa Suleyman is one of the few people who has sat at the center of AI for three different eras: the research boom, the consumer chatbot wave, and now the race to build superintelligence inside a hyperscaler. In 2010 he co-founded DeepMind with Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg, the London lab that Google bought in 2014 for a reported £400 million and that would later ship AlphaGo, AlphaFold, and most of the research muscle now inside Google DeepMind. Suleyman ran applied AI — the side that tried to turn research into products — and spent years pushing AI ethics and policy from inside the company.
After leaving Google in 2022, he co-founded Inflection AI with Reid Hoffman and built Pi, a deliberately warm, emotionally fluent chatbot that read as a reaction to the cold, task-driven style of ChatGPT. Inflection raised $1.5B, trained its own frontier models, and then in March 2024 pulled off the most unusual deal of the AI era: Microsoft paid roughly $650M in a reverse-acqui-hire, licensed Inflection’s tech, and brought Suleyman and most of his team in-house. Suleyman became CEO of the newly created Microsoft AI division, running Copilot, Bing, and Edge, reporting directly to Satya Nadella.
In late 2025 Microsoft spun up a “Superintelligence” team under Suleyman, and in March 2026 his role shifted again — off the broader Copilot product org and onto frontier model work, part of Microsoft’s visible pivot toward building its own models rather than depending on OpenAI. For developers, that shift matters: Microsoft is now the biggest AI distributor on earth and a frontier lab, and Suleyman is the person deciding what that stack looks like.
His public writing is more interesting than most CEO output. The Coming Wave (2023) is a serious argument for AI “containment” that Bill Gates called his favorite book on AI, and his 2025 essay Seemingly Conscious AI — warning that models will soon feel conscious whether or not they are, and that this itself is a safety problem — is worth reading even if you disagree with it. He is not a neutral narrator, but he is a thoughtful one.

DeepMind management investigation (2019–2021). Suleyman was placed on administrative leave from DeepMind in 2019 after staff complaints about his management style, and an external law firm was brought in to investigate. He acknowledged that he “drove people too hard” and that his style “was not constructive.” Margaret Mitchell publicly said he had yelled at her. Google kept him and promoted him into a policy role before he left in 2022. The episode is well-documented — see CNBC’s reporting — and it still surfaces whenever Microsoft puts him in front of a new team.
The Inflection → Microsoft deal (2024). The $650M reverse-acqui-hire let Microsoft absorb Inflection’s team and tech without formally buying the company, leaving investors whole and regulators largely without a merger to review. Critics argued it was a template for skirting antitrust scrutiny of AI consolidation; the UK’s CMA opened and eventually closed a review.
