Anthropic President, the operational force
Daniela Amodei
Profile
If Dario Amodei is Anthropic’s public face — the research mind talking about scaling laws and existential risk — his sister Daniela is the reason the company actually functions. She runs operations, strategy, partnerships, hiring, and the commercial side of the business. Dario sets the vision; Daniela turns it into a company that can ship Claude, sign cloud deals with Amazon and Google, and grow headcount into the thousands without imploding. In the AI arms race, most of the attention goes to the researchers. The operators win the companies.
Her path is unusual. She studied English literature at UC Santa Cruz on a classical flute scholarship, worked on a congressional campaign, then landed an early role at Stripe in 2013 when the payments company was still small. In 2018 she moved to OpenAI, eventually becoming VP of Safety and Policy — managing the team during GPT-2 and GPT-3. In 2020 she and Dario led a group of seven OpenAI defectors out the door, citing disagreements over commercialization and safety direction. Anthropic was the result.
Since co-founding the company in 2021, she’s overseen its jump from a small research collective to one of the most valuable private companies in the world — $60B valuation in early 2025, then reportedly $380B by early 2026 after a Series G. Annualized revenue went from around $9B to $19B in under four months. That kind of scaling doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because someone is making the org chart work while the researchers argue about interpretability.
For developers learning AI, she’s worth paying attention to for a different reason: she’s a non-technical founder at the top of a frontier AI lab. Her public interviews are less about transformers and more about how you actually build a company around models you’re not sure are safe. She’s made a point of hiring humanities majors alongside ML PhDs, arguing that communication, judgment, and people skills matter more as AI does more of the coding. If you want to understand how frontier labs actually operate — who makes which decisions, how trust with enterprise customers gets built, why some labs ship and others don’t — she’s the person explaining it.
